A SCHOOL AND SPORTS COMPLEX FOR KAOLACK

WEST AFRICA

ELHADJ DIOUF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN

Kaolack, Senegal | Inauguration in May 2024

The Harz-Kurier, the local newspaper of EDF Osterode's home town, devoted an entire page to the opening of the school and sports complex.

The new social private school “Elhadj Diouf” offers both boys and girls a basic general education at a high level. A free, daily hot meal and emergency medical care are naturally part of the offer. WEF West Africa is the financier and sponsor of an entire floor. The entire school complex was enthusiastically explored by local children as soon as it was inaugurated in May.

The official start of lessons took place in November 2024.

KAOLACK, SENEGAL

Kaolack is a large city in the centre-west of Senegal with a population of just under 300,000. It is the prefecture of the Kaolack department in the Kaolack region. It gained importance as the economic and commercial centre of the peanut basin.

In his position as founder and chairman of the aid organization “Tangeni Shilongo Namibia” (TSN), which is recognized as a non-profit association in Germany and Namibia, Volkan Sazli oversees the DRC School Project & Community Centre and the OPEN DOORS Education Centre (ODEC) in Swakopmund.

As Managing Director of WEF South West Africa, he will develop further education projects in Namibia and neighboring countries in South West Africa on behalf of the Werner Erkes Foundation over the next few years. The construction of the new DRC School Project in Swakopmund is already scheduled for this year. (see below)

The Board of the Werner Erkes Foundation is looking forward to a competent and cordial cooperation.

The EDF is committed to ensuring that...

> German and Senegalese youth are brought together as the foundation of a cultural bridge, e.g. by facilitating workshop encounters.

> local support in the areas of education, medicine, nutrition, sports, music, etc. takes place,

so that...

  • girls and boys can attend school (school fees, transportation)

  • improving learning conditions (school materials, rooms, tutoring, etc.)
  • ensuring medical care in Kaolack
  • providing children with a balanced diet
  • offering young people prospects to avoid the causes of flight
  • training junior ambassadors to sensitize their fellow human beings to ONE world.

Djiby Diouf, Managing Director

The Werner Erkes Foundation is currently establishing the WE Foundation West Africa in Senegal, which will set up educational projects there and in neighboring countries.

Dr. Djiby Diouf from Senegal will be in charge of this great project based in his native town of Kaolack. In his doctoral thesis from 2009, he already dealt with the issue of sustainable development in Senegal in connection with the political guidelines and sociological obstacles using Kaolack as an example.

WERNER ERKES SPORTS COMPLEX

Kaolack, Senegal | Inaugurated in May 2024

The sports and play area is directly adjacent to the school grounds. The facility includes a multifunctional sports field with high-quality flooring for tennis, football, basketball, etc., a building with changing rooms and toilets, and two playgrounds. We financed the entire sports and play area, which was built together with the EDF Foundation and the Association AKS (Kaolack).
The sports facility will also be accessible to sports clubs in Kaolack and the wider area. The income generated will benefit the school project. Completion and opening was in May 2024.
WES is very happy to have been able to get involved in this exciting flagship project in Senegal.

🇬🇭 CONSTRUCTION OF AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WITH KINDERGARTEN

Hobor, Ghana

The project is located in the Hobor area of Ghana, approximately two hours northwest of the capital Accra. Children in this area live scattered across small settlements and previously had no school to attend. The nearest school is either too far away or the families cannot afford the school fees. As a result, child labour is often the norm instead of school education.

The first part of the school complex, with three classrooms, sanitary facilities and access to clean water, was completed in October 2023! The first lessons took place in two classes, each with 30 children.
Since April 2025, the primary school with kindergarten has been fully operational after the completion of the upper floor, which now has a total of four classrooms, an office, a kitchen and sanitary facilities.

To meet the expected demand for a secondary school, a larger second school complex is already being planned on a neighbouring plot of land.

This is the result of a very good and trusting cooperation between ‘Together for Ghana’, ‘Kinder Zentrum International’ and WEF East Africa.
