🇷🇴 BOARDING SCHOOL FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
Victoria, Romania | Opening in March 2021

The new, summery, colourful paintwork emphasises the cheerful atmosphere of the entire project

Originally planned as a boarding school for 40 children from disadvantaged families in the Victoria area, the building had to be redesigned and rebuilt due to government regulations. The aim now is to provide all boarding school children with a family-like living environment. To this end, groups of four to six children will live together with a teacher in separate living units within the building.
Although we were very satisfied with the previous boarding school model in larger groups, we welcome the new government guidelines as they offer clear advantages for the children's personal development. However, the new concept means that fewer places are available: instead of 40, only 25 girls and boys aged 6 to 16 can now be accommodated. In order to keep personnel costs low, committed parents are actively involved in everyday life wherever possible.
To further expand capacity, the attic is currently being converted so that around 20 additional children can find a safe home in the future.

But that's not all: 60 children are already being looked after in the after-school programme on weekdays. This means that around 100 children now receive a hot meal every day, get help with their homework and can let off steam on the playground, the artificial turf football pitch and in the newly built sports hall. Even though this concept cannot completely replace a functioning family, it has created an excellent living and care concept that sustainably improves the living situation of the children and their families.
We would like to thank the members and friends of the Lahai-Roi aid organisation in Germany and Romania for their tremendous, selfless commitment to the planning, construction and operation of this forward-looking project. Their personal dedication has made it possible to reduce the construction costs considerably. The building is owned by the foundation, which also provided all the capital.

Lahai-Roi works hand-in-hand with employees from Germany and Romania. The aid organisation has set itself the task of helping poor local people out of Christian charity. The aid is intended to be material, sustainable, but also life-changing and spiritual.
To ensure that your support reaches its destination 1:1, the organisation relies on volunteers.
The work of Lahai-Roi is exemplary for other intended collaborations with aid organisations in Eastern Europe under the umbrella of the Werner Erkes Foundation.

Visits to needy families near Iași
In addition to their duties as sponsors of the boarding school, the voluntary members of the association have been helping the poorest people in the Victoria area for many years with deliveries of food, fuel, Christmas presents for the children, etc. Since the outbreak of the war, they have also been active with similar deliveries to the Ukrainian population with the support of the Werner Erkes Foundation. We are always impressed by the selfless commitment of those involved.
Below are some photos of family visits on our trips to Victoria, right on the border with Moldova, in 2017, 2021 and 2024, which always make us think.

Sport plays an important role in the lives of schoolchildren. Regular exercise keeps children and young people healthy and fit. Sport strengthens the heart, muscles and immune system.

🇷🇴 MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPORTS HALL
WITH MANAGER‘S FLAT
Victoria, Romania | Opening in April 2024

After the small opening party for the children, the hall was immediately put to the test

Shortly after the boarding school opened, everyone involved realised that the young residents needed a place where they could move around and let off steam, especially during the often very harsh winters in eastern Romania. It has long been scientifically proven that playful and physical activities have a positive influence on learning ability. As there were no such facilities in the city of Victoria and the surrounding area, the idea quickly arose to build a modern sports hall that could be used primarily for ball games.
The Werner Erkes Foundation financed the entire construction of the hall and made it possible on its own property directly adjacent to the boarding school. We would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the extraordinary personal commitment and dedication of the Friends of Lahai-Roi, who now run the sports hall together with the boarding school and thus contribute significantly to the success of the project.
The new hall also generates income – for example, by renting it out to sports clubs or using it as an event venue. These proceeds naturally benefit the boarding school project directly. For this reason, ancillary rooms such as changing rooms, toilets and catering areas were taken into account during the planning stage. Both at the opening and in daily operation, the great enthusiasm is clearly noticeable – among the children as well as among many adult visitors.
A granny flat for the head of the boarding school and sports hall and his family has also been integrated into the building. The resulting very short distances in an emergency give families and staff additional security.
