The rare mountain gorillas live in Uganda. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is particularly well known, as it is home to around half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas.

🇺🇬 FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL FOR MUSIC, LANGUAGES AND POLYTECHNIC STUDIES (IMLS)
Masaka, Uganda | planned start of construction was summer 2024

IMLS started in 2016 as a combination of music school, cultural, IT and language centre. As the local sponsor, the Ugandan organisation IMLS has set itself the task of providing support, structure and community to disadvantaged and talented people through music and cultural-linguistic workshops.
Since 2021, classes have been held on the ground floor, which covers approximately 500 square metres. Once all five floors have been completed, the building will have a total usable area of 5,000 square metres.
Construction was scheduled to begin in summer 2024.

Since 2021, it has also been possible to learn vocational skills at the IMLS. In order to create realistic life prospects for many young people in this regard, the Werner Erkes Foundation will take on this project and, in addition to the existing music, language and IT offerings, will build a training centre above the recently completed ‘Musikstockwerk’ construction phase, where students will be able to learn tailoring, journalism, print media, carpentry/instrument making and repair, sound engineering, hairdressing or fashion design, bricklaying, electrical engineering, plumbing, welding, car mechanics, agriculture, business administration with project management, childcare, cooking, catering/hospitality, film and photography.
This requires suitable premises on several floors. In particular, the upper basement (the building will be constructed on a slope) will house a sewing workshop, a carpentry workshop with an integrated instrument-making workshop, a recording studio, a meeting room, choir and orchestra rehearsal rooms and a band room. The ground floor will also feature large seminar rooms with movable walls, a library, a museum, a piano practice studio, a health advice centre and an employment agency. Two further floors complete the centre, with offices and training rooms, as well as a large multifunctional concert and theatre hall under the roof.
It could have been a successful project
Unfortunately, we were forced to temporarily halt construction of the music school. The reason for this is serious allegations of corruption. After WES filed a complaint, the Regensburg public prosecutor's office has been conducting investigations since March 2025.9

WEF East Africa would like to thank the FMK association for its active support of the IMLS project in Masaka, Uganda.
FMK (Regensburg) supports music and cultural projects in Uganda both ideally and financially. The focus is particularly on the International School of Music Languages and Polytechnic Studies (IMLS), the construction and maintenance of which is also financed by donations from the association.
Regular benefit concerts, such as the Euro-African concert series “Himbisa Mukama”, concert tours, music workshops and other fundraising campaigns will continue to make an important contribution to the school's upkeep in the future.
DR JOSEPH WASSWA HAS BEEN DISMISSED AS MANAGING DIRECTOR OF WEF EAST AFRICA
The position of Managing Director, which Dr. Joseph Wasswa held for almost a year, has been in place since the 14th January 2025 vacant. Mr. Peter von Heyking will take over his duties until further notice. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact him.
A large part of the population in the Kasese District lives from agriculture and cultivates small fields, mostly by hand.

🇺🇬 PRIMARY SCHOOL, KASESE
Kasese, Uganda | Completion of the 1st construction phase 2024

The Nyamwamba and Kirembe divisions in the Kasese district in western Uganda are an area of poverty. The majority of the inhabitants live from agriculture, and many families have to get by on less than €1 per day. In rural areas of Uganda, most communities have no schools, and the few state schools that do exist are very far away, in poor condition and perform very poorly in national exams, forcing children to walk more than 10 km to the nearest school, which charges high fees that most families cannot afford. As a result, a large proportion of children do not even receive a primary education, and of those who do start, many drop out due to lack of money and the long distance to the nearest school. The old or temporary Horizon Primary School in Kasese, built by REP in 2013, was a relief for many families and orphans, but the school is still in very poor condition, has few amenities and does not offer education beyond primary school.
Therefore, the construction of a new school building had long been planned and was essential.

To change this situation, WES and REP (Reach the Poor) are building a school of excellence that will enable children to progress from nursery school (early childhood education) through primary school to the end of their education. The school will not only meet the educational needs of the children, but will also offer literacy courses, ICT training and lectures on practical life skills to improve the skills of the students so that they can compete with their peers in other developed cities in the country that already have better school facilities, thereby reducing the economic gap.
REACH THE POOR: The school follows the guidelines of the National Curriculum Development Centre and the teaching standards of the Ministry of Education and Sports. We focus on nurturing the children's personalities by ensuring the holistic development and growth of each child. Our teachers are trained to recognise and nurture the strengths and talents of the pupils. They strive to identify the individual weaknesses of the children and offer them support so that they can find their own way of learning and develop into self-confident and responsible individuals.
